Headline act Steve Angello took to the stage in the unusual venue of Bolton Arena, in the Greater Manchester suburb of Horwich. Horwich is a mere 15 miles from where I live, so there was no doubt I was going to take advantage of a rave on my ‘doorstep’.
Having not seen a live set from Steve Angello for just over a year I was apprehensive over what to expect, however I shouldn’t have been. The former Swedish House Mafia DJ pulled out the stops with a fantastic array of tunes, both old and new, pyro and confetti thrown in the mix.
For me his set was most definitely the highlight of the night as sadly the other headline act, Knife Party, cancelled just a few days before the gig.
Despite cancelling, Don’t Let Daddy Know managed to get Don Diablo to fill in and although not what I had wanted to see, he had a good set and kept everyone entertained.
Bolton Arena was an unusual venue for this rave and there were a lot of issues with it. To start with we had to queue for over an hour to get in, thankfully they let people in after the original last entry time. Then when we walked in the merch, bars and main stage were all in the same room. Even though the stage was at one end, the lights were on at the other end so a lot of the atmosphere was lost.
And all the toilets were portable toilets, which I’d expect at a festival but not in a gig at this venue. All of which were pretty vile by the time I got in at about 11.30pm.
Leaving the gig around 4am I have to say it definitely wasn’t the best DLDK rave I’ve been to (been to two before), but it wouldn’t put me off going again. Maybe go back to Victoria Warehouse next time DLDK? It was a much better venue.
