What an amazing weekend. It’s a week ago that I was in the thick of Creamfields, the biggest and best dance music festival in the UK that really excelled itself this year.
Not only did they have some of the biggest stages around, they also replaced one of the tents with a huge structure called Steel Yard, which I later found out they are moving to Liverpool to host some amazing club nights including Axwell Λ Ingrosso in November.
This year Creamfields took place over four days – Thursday to Sunday – but I was only there for the three ‘main’ days, Friday onwards.
As soon as the clock hit 5pm on Friday I was out of the office dancing all the way to the car. Throwing my rucksack, camp chair and wellies in the boot as I was off, with my husband and a friend, ready to meet another friend who had kindly offered to put our tents up.
Unfortunately we arrived too late to see NERVO, on the Arc Stage (previously North Stage) who we have been lucky enough to see at Creamfields, EDC and Hakkasan (Las Vegas), but we did manage to catch most of Knife Party’s set.
We arrived about 15 minutes into their set, but that didn’t matter as they still belted out loads of their tunes as well. Who’d have thought dancing to the old Nokia ringtone would be so amazing?
For me Saturday and Sunday were where the festival really picked up its pace. Saturday saw Avicii, Axwell Λ Ingrosso (my personal faves) and Jack Ü take to the main stages and the Steel Yard for their sets.
Axwell Λ Ingrosso can do no wrong, they kept the crowd dancing throughout their set and even threw in a bit of The Pointer Sisters’ ‘I’m So Excited’ mixed with Major Lazer’s ‘Lean On’. Something I would love to get my hands on!
Despite the slight hiccup when part of the stage caught fire(!) what I saw of their 1.5 hour set was tip top as it pretty much always is.
Over on the Horizon Stage (South Stage) Avicii saw out the last ever UK performance of his career, but I thought it was a disappointment and wish I’d watched all of Axwell Λ Ingrosso’s set.
It was after midnight when I finally made it into the Steel Yard, the impressive new structure for the festival. There Diplo and Skrillex took to the stage under their collective name Jack Ü and while I’m not usually a fan of dubstep and hard house I loved their set.
Sunday was one of the most amazing days in all the years I’ve been to Creamfields. I won a competition with Aussie Hair Care to stand at the side of the stage while Oliver Heldens was on the Horizon Stage.
It may have only been 30 minutes, but it was 30 minutes within a few feet of a world class DJ and with an amazing view across the festival of the thousands of people there to see him.
Sunday night we watched Calvin Harris. While we’ve seen him a number of times he’s pretty much guaranteed to do a good set – especially at Creamfields. Obviously he was going to play his chart hits, but it was in between his hits that he really mixed it up for the EDM hungry crowd.
This was the first time I have camped at Creamfields since that fateful weekend when the festival was cancelled halfway through, and you know what, I didn’t regret it. We were in the Gold camping section which is worth it in my opinion, nicer toilets and facilities and it is located much closer to the main arenas.
This year there was also a campsite village which was available to people from all campsites and what a fun place it was to hang out. There were fairground rides, shops, food vans, an inflatable church – where you could get ‘married’ and even free hair-styling for girls or haircuts for guys!
This year was made extra special by having the chance to be on the stage.
What a weekend!
This year the festival really excelled itself so it seems hard to see how it can get even better for its 20th anniversary next year, but they promise it will. Roll on Creamfields 2017!
A week later I’m still listening to:
Axwell Λ Ingrosso – I’m So Excited / Lean On
Jack Ü – Febreze
Dr. Kucho! & Gregor Salto – Can’t Stop Playing (Oliver Heldens & Gregor Salto Remix)
Knife Party – Internet Friends
Swedish House Mafia – In My Mind
